EU Announcement: ChatGPT Fails Standards on Data Accuracy

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has expressed reservations regarding the reliability of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular artificial intelligence model. In a report published on Friday, the EDPB stated that the measures taken by the company concerning transparency and data accuracy are insufficient. While acknowledging the benefits of OpenAI’s work, the EDPB emphasized that the firm needs to make further improvements.

In response to increasing concerns about the use of ChatGPT, particularly in Italy, European Union officials have taken action. Although the details of the report have not been disclosed due to ongoing local investigations, the report’s findings appear to reflect the general views of the authorities.

ChatGPT can give biased and erroneous answers

For the European Union, data accuracy is of utmost importance. The accuracy of data lies at the core of data protection programs. According to the report, ChatGPT’s system can produce biased or erroneous results. Additionally, the report highlights that users may accept answers from ChatGPT as correct without questioning them, failing to verify the accuracy of the information they receive.

Italy banned the use of ChatGPT in April 2023 due to privacy concerns. Subsequently, ChatGPT was relaunched after OpenAI demonstrated compliance with the country’s laws. Italy was the first Western country to disable the chatbot.

As a result, the European Data Protection Board expressed concerns about ChatGPT’s compliance with EU data accuracy standards and stated that OpenAI must work harder to ensure the accuracy of ChatGPT’s outputs and protect individuals’ data.
